About

Built for people who would rather own less and use it longer

Kept is a weekly shortlist of objects that hold up. One person picks them, uses them, and writes down why they stayed.

Why

Most lists are built to be scrolled past. This one is built to be finished. There are nineteen objects here right now, not nineteen hundred, and every one of them has been on my desk, in my kitchen or in my bag for months before it went up.

Not the newest, but the one that lasts. Not a ranking, but a shortlist. Not reviews, but reasons.

Nothing is sorted by price or popularity. A $24 notebook sits next to a $690 pair of speakers because they meet the same standard, and the standard is the only thing that is ranked.

3,100 people read the Monday letter. 214 objects have been considered this year and 19 made it.

Standard

  1. It does one job well, and it is obvious what the job is.
  2. It can be repaired, or it is simple enough that it will not need to be.
  3. It looks better after a year of use than it did in the box.
  4. I would buy it again, at full price, today.

Brands cannot pay to be listed. Some links earn a small commission, which keeps the letter free and does not change what gets in.
